What is Olympic Tae Kwon Do?

Tae means to strike with the foot, kwon means to strike with the hand, and Do means the art or way. Taekwondo is the art of striking with the hands and feet.

Taekwondo was formally established in 1955 through the unification of the five original Korean martial art academies at the end of the Japanese occupation which had banned the practice of Martial Arts by civilians.

In 1973 the World Tae Kwon Do Federation  was established and in 988,Taekwondo became an exhibition sport in the Seoul Olympics. During the ensuing decade, the international popularity of Taekwondo skyrocketed and in 2000, Taekwondo became an official Olympic sport.

Unlike most other martial arts like Karate, Kung Fu, and the original Taekwondo unified in 1955, sport Taekwondo focuses almost exclusively on the power and reach of the legs to demonstrate combative supremacy over ones opponent.
